STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF WEATHER ON HUMAN AFFAIRS |

Follow stories in the newspaper about ways in which weather affects human affairs. Clip articles and glue into a section in your notebook. Scan the Internet news and print out a story a day for a period of time. Research how weather has affected human affairs on historical happenings.

Study how sky watching influenced the development of mathematics. Study how weather affected the development of technology. Trace the history of how weather forecasting developed. Learn about Luke Howard and how he named clouds. See Cloudman's story of Luke Howard. Study weather and climate patterns in relationship to human populations around the earth.

READ STORIES ABOUT THE SKY AND MYTHOLOGY AND LITERATURE |

Find stories of oral sky myths, such as creation myths, in cultures around the world. Compare modern ideas about the sky and spiritual ideas. Research classical literature for stories about the sky and weather. Compare to modern literature. Find rituals that certain cultures developed in relationship to the weather (rain dances, etc)?

WRITE /REFLECT ON THE SKY AND FEELINGS |
|
Develop your vision for the future. What do you hope for your grandchildren? How will weather make this possible. Explore the ways that weather (light, pressure, wind, temperature) affects a person's mood. Take a survey.

REPORT ON YOUR COMMUNITY |
|
Gather oral histories from older people in your community. How did the weather influence their lives? How do they feel about the weather now? Gather opinions from friends, family, and people in your community about the weather and how it affects their lives. Compile perspectives from businesses on the way weather has affected the economics or landscape of your area, state, or another region of the world. Interview your local weather record keeper or weather news person. Report the results of the information that you gather (data, stories,etc.) to your local newspaper or a community group.

Take a younger person out to look at the clouds. Show them the cloud types on Cloudman.com. Tell them the story of Luke Howard, the man who named clouds. Do data gathering together.

SKY AND RECREATION |

Explore the ways that the sky is used for recreation (sky diving, hang gliding, kite flying, glider and plane flying, bird watching, sailing, airplanes). What role does weather play in these activities.

SKY AND POLITICS |
|
Research how governments and the military have used the sky. What happens with nuclear fallout? Research how wastes/pollutants move through the sky (acid rain, aerosols, heavy metals,etc.). What can be done to solve this problem? Research ideas about the future of the sky. Who owns the sky and how will nations work together? |
